A drip from the ceiling during a storm is stressful. The good news is that you control the damage from inside while you wait for a roofer. These steps are temporary. A real repair always happens on the roof.

Safety First

  • Turn off power to any light fixture or outlet near the leak.
  • Never climb onto a wet, icy or steep roof.
  • Watch for a sagging ceiling. A bulge full of water will collapse.

Step 1: Contain the Water

Move furniture and electronics away. Put a bucket under the drip and lay down towels or a tarp. Place a scrap of wood in the bucket to stop the splashing.

Step 2: Relieve a Bulging Ceiling

If water pools above the drywall, poke a small hole at the lowest point of the bulge with a screwdriver. Let the water drain into the bucket. A small hole is far cheaper to patch than a collapsed ceiling.

Step 3: Find the Leak in the Attic

Bring a flashlight into the attic and follow the water trail uphill. Water travels along rafters and roof decking, so the entry point often sits several feet from the ceiling stain. Look for:

  • Wet or dark stains on the underside of the roof deck.
  • Daylight through the boards.
  • Damp insulation.
  • Rusty nails or water around vent pipes and the chimney.

Mark the spot. Measure from a fixed point, like the chimney or a vent, so your roofer finds it fast outside.

Step 4: Apply a Temporary Patch

  • Spread roofing tar or sealant over the wet spot on the underside of the decking.
  • Press a piece of plywood or shingle into the tar to cover a hole.
  • Direct the water to the bucket with a strip of plastic sheeting stapled to the rafters.

Step 5: Dry Everything Out

Pull out soaked insulation and run fans or a dehumidifier. The EPA advises drying wet materials within 24 to 48 hours to help prevent mold growth.

Common Causes of Roof Leaks in Connecticut

  • Shingles lost or lifted by wind.
  • Cracked flashing around chimneys, skylights and walls.
  • Worn rubber boots around plumbing vents.
  • Ice dams that push meltwater under shingles.
  • Clogged gutters that back water onto the roof edge.

When to Call a Roofer

Call right away after any leak. Take photos for your insurance company. If your roof is near 20 years old or leaks in more than one spot, a full replacement often costs less over time than repeated repairs. See our Connecticut roofing services.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible to fix a roof leak from the inside?

Only temporarily. Roofing tar, a patch or a tarp from the attic side slows the water, but a permanent repair must happen on the roof surface.

What causes most roof leaks?

Common causes include damaged or missing shingles, failed flashing around chimneys and vents, cracked pipe boots, clogged gutters and ice dams.

Is a roof leak an emergency?

Treat it as urgent. Water damages insulation, drywall and framing quickly and leads to mold, so contain it right away and schedule a repair.
