Your roof protects everything under it. Choosing the wrong roofer leads to leaks, voided warranties and money lost. Use this checklist before you sign anything.

1. Verify Connecticut Registration

Connecticut requires home improvement contractors to register with the Department of Consumer Protection. Look up any roofer by name or number on the state eLicense site at elicense.ct.gov. A registered contractor gives you access to the state Home Improvement Guaranty Fund if something goes wrong.

2. Confirm Insurance

Ask for certificates of insurance sent directly from the insurance agent. You want both:

  • General liability insurance to cover damage to your home.
  • Workers' compensation to cover injuries on your property.

3. Choose a Local Company

A local roofer knows Connecticut weather, from nor'easters to ice dams. A local company is also there next year if you need warranty work. Storm chasers often vanish after the job.

4. Ask About Manufacturer Certifications

Shingle manufacturers like Owens Corning certify contractors who meet their training standards. Certified installers often offer stronger warranties that cover both materials and labor.

5. Get Written, Detailed Estimates

Collect at least three estimates. Each one should list:

  • Shingle brand, line and color.
  • Tear-off of old layers and disposal.
  • Underlayment, ice and water shield, drip edge and flashing.
  • Ventilation work.
  • Decking replacement cost per sheet if rot is found.
  • Payment schedule and start date.

6. Compare Warranties

A good roof carries two warranties. The manufacturer covers the materials. The contractor covers the workmanship. Get both in writing and ask how long each one lasts.

7. Read Reviews and Ask for References

Check Google reviews and ask for addresses of recent jobs near you. Drive by and look at the work.

Red Flags to Avoid

  • Door-to-door sales right after a storm.
  • Pressure to sign the same day.
  • Large cash deposits up front.
  • No written contract or vague scope.
  • No physical business address.

Thinking About Solar?

If you plan to add solar panels, replace an aging roof first. Premier Improvements installs roofing and solar together as one project, so one crew handles both. Learn about our residential roofing and solar installation services.
