2026 update: the 30 percent federal tax credit ended for homeowner-owned solar after December 31, 2025. Connecticut still pays you for 20 years through RRES. See every 2026 Connecticut solar incentive or compare cash, loan and lease over 25 years.

Key Facts

  • If your asphalt roof is more than 10 years old, replace it before solar goes on.
  • Removing and reinstalling panels later adds cost and time, so replace the roof first.
  • Typical CT solar system: 12.09 kW at about $2.68 per watt, or $32,379 on average (EnergySage, Oct 2026).
  • The CT Green Bank Smart-E loan lets up to 25 percent of the loan go to non-energy work like a roof.
  • Every roof and solar job carries our 10-Year Workmanship Warranty and 25-Year Roof Penetration Warranty.

Replace your roof first, or at the same time as solar, when the shingles are more than 10 years old. Doing both together saves the cost of pulling the panels off later and puts the roof and the array under one company's warranty.

Why Roof and Solar Belong in One Project

A solar array covers your roof for decades. If the shingles under it fail in year 12, the panels have to come off, the roof gets replaced, and the panels go back on. That detour costs thousands and pauses your solar savings.

When two companies split the job, you also split the warranty. The roofer blames the solar mounts. The solar company blames the shingles. When one team does both, one company stands behind every penetration and every shingle.

How Our Roof and Solar Process Works

  1. Site visit and design. We measure the roof, inspect the attic and design the array in Aurora Solar.
  2. One proposal. You see the roof, the solar system and the financing on one page.
  3. Permits and utility paperwork. We file the building permits and the Eversource or UI interconnection.
  4. Roof replacement. Tear-off to the deck, full ice and water shield and Owens Corning Duration shingles.
  5. Solar installation. Flashed mounts, racking, panels and inverters on the new roof.
  6. Inspections and turn-on. We meet the town inspector and coordinate permission to operate with your utility.

Already Have Solar and Need a New Roof?

We remove your panels, replace the roof and reinstall the system with new mounting brackets. We wait 30 days after the roof is complete before reinstalling so the new roof settles. Some solar leases and PPAs require their own crew to touch the panels, so check your agreement first. Removing panels sometimes affects the panel warranty, so we check yours before we start. See our full solar panel removal and reinstallation guide.

Incentives and Financing for Roof and Solar

  • Connecticut's Residential Renewable Energy Solutions program pays solar owners for 20 years. See our CT solar incentives guide.
  • Smart-E loans from the CT Green Bank run up to $50,000, and up to 25 percent covers non-energy work like the roof.
  • Connecticut exempts residential solar from property tax and sales tax.
  • The federal 25D residential credit ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025. Leases and PPAs follow different federal rules.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I replace my roof before getting solar panels?

Yes, when your asphalt roof is more than 10 years old. Panel warranties run 25 years or more. Replacing the roof first avoids paying later to remove and reinstall the array.

How much does it cost to remove and reinstall solar panels for a new roof?

We price it in writing after a free inspection. Our price includes new mounting brackets, and we reinstall 30 days after the roof is complete.

Will solar panels cause my new roof to leak?

Not when the mounts are flashed and sealed correctly. When we install your new roof with your solar, the attachments we install carry a 25-Year Roof Penetration Warranty.

Does a solar loan cover a new roof?

Yes. The CT Green Bank Smart-E loan lets up to 25 percent of the loan go to non-energy work like a roof replacement when you add solar or a battery.

Does a new roof qualify for a federal tax credit?

No. Standard roofs never qualified for the federal solar credit, and the federal 25D residential clean energy credit ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025.
